Milestone 2002: Founding the TUM School of Management
The TUM School of Management is celebrating 20 years since its founding in 2002 and we want to share this special moment with the TUM Community and beyond. Throughout this year, we will go down memory lane and present milestones of our journey, report about our achievements as well as celebrate the anniversary at several events.
We start today by presenting the very 1st milestone in our history, which is the foundation of the TUM Business School and the cutting-edge idea behind it.
In 2002, on October 21, the inauguration of the TUM School of Management took place and more than 800 international guests were present. The first Dean of the TUM School of Management Professor Ralf Reichwald stated four guiding principles for the school in his inauguration speech:
Firstly, uniting management and technology, secondly, orientation towards international competition, thirdly, the integration and synergy of expertise by creating centers of excellence, and fourthly, the promotion of entrepreneurship.
“The strategic mission of the TUM School of Management in research and education is its joint focus on technology and management. The objective was to foster interdisciplinary research in the area of innovative technologies enabling organizational change and customer-centricity. This is clearly visible in its business programs. They are unique and outstanding!” states Professor Ralf Reichwald.
The TUM School of Management is the first school among all other faculties at the Technical University of Munich. Having a business school with a technology specialization was an innovative approach, which is still a unique selling point. Since its foundation in 2002, the school has been engaged in a broad range of research projects that bridge the gap between the disciplines management, engineering, natural and life sciences. The research focuses on future trends and real-world solutions that advance innovation-based businesses and benefit society at large.
The school has shown impressive strength in its disciplines and has been able to grow continuously. By continuously strategizing and seizing opportunities, 20 years since its foundation, the school is more future-proof than ever compared to other business schools.
“I want to thank the founders of the TUM School of Management, the former TUM President Professor Wolfgang Herrmann and the first Dean of the TUM School of Management Professor Ralf Reichwald, who initiated the concept of an interdisciplinary business school.
Today, the TUM School of Management is one of the world’s leading business schools, as shown by various renowned university rankings, and we are among the 1% of elite schools worldwide to hold a Triple Crown Accreditation” says Dean Professor Gunther Friedl.
In fact, the TUM SoM lives its excellence and interdisciplinarity even beyond its curriculum and initiated three research centers that are now an integral part of the TUM, such as the Center for Digital Technology and Management, the Entrepreneurship Research Institute, and the joint DFG Graduate School AdONE.
